Leen Werbrouck Leen grew up in Flanders, Belgium. Hers was the last house in the town, and goats, chickens, horses, and cows browsed in the fields just past her garden. The farm, now a registered historical monument, was where Leen spent much of her free time. After high school, Leen moved to the city of Ghent to study at the University and earned her degree in experimental psychology. In 1993 she moved to Montreal, where she earned a Masters degree in counseling psychology, got married, and had a son. Leen and family have lived in Teaneck, NJ since 2000. She is the Assistant Director of the Division of Senior Services at the County of Bergen, where, she coordinates programs that give senior citizens the help they need to stay healthy and enjoy life in the community. After reading about the horrors of puppy mills and dog fighting rings, Leen decided to help homeless dogs. She adopted Charles, a rescue dog who is part beagle, part terrier and always hungry. Charles continues to make real progress training his family about how to treat a dog properly. Leen and her son spent a week as volunteers in Best Friends’ Dog Town in Kanab, Utah, where she fell in love with these marvelous, intelligent animals. She hopes to save many more.
